Helsinki architecture and Alvar Aalto

Finland has been under Swedish regime at 1700 and afterward under Russian empire. Little is left from Swedish times but Russian architecture is still widely seen in few churches and jugend villas.

Later, after Finland became independent, there was huge influence of Alvar Aalto in city scenery. Aalto was famous about his simple and modern architecture which respected the Finnish nature. Alvar Aalto (died 1976) has designed Finlandia house and Kulttuuritalo in Kallio (north city center) and many other buildings around Finland.
